Pregnancy timeline . . .

30 DAYS IN: ONE MONTH PREGNANT - Also "Ultrasound Day" 😊 10/28/18

The one-month mark is an especially exciting time for breeders. For the dam it’s the half-way point, which means another month to go. The dam will start showing excitable behavior, although not in the same way as breeders. This can include an increase in grooming, wandering, sniffing, digging, and other nesting and den-seeking behaviors. You can help ease her anxiousness by fixing her a nesting area in a desired—but safe and quiet—location. (Kiddie pools lined with newspapers and blankets work well.) A “nest box” or “den” should be large enough for her to stretch out and move around in without potentially squashing a pup. A nest box with raised sides and a door is ideal. The sides should be low enough for her to step over. If she has to jump over the sides, you could risk injuring or crushing a puppy.

At this point, the dam’s nipples will swell even more, and the pups are approximately the size of golf balls. A veterinarian can make an assessment and give an estimate of how many pups to expect. Also, an ultrasound can be performed around this time.

The fetuses now look like tiny pups rather than tadpoles. They have started to develop their toes, claws, whiskers, and gender specific organs (boys or girls). The eyes that were previously open are now sealing closed and will not open again until a few weeks after the pups are born. The pups are now at a stage in which they are less susceptible to developmental problems.

Consider switching the dam to a quality puppy formula at this time and continue feeding it to her throughout the pregnancy and during nursing. Puppy foods are formulated for growth and development and this includes during the prenatal stages. It also has slightly higher amounts of proteins and fats. Also, now is a good time to increase the amount of food given to the dam to keep up with the demands placed on her by the constantly growing pups. Some breeders recommend a vitamin supplement as well (Ask your veterinarian first!). Remember: keep feedings in small but frequent rations throughout the day.

DAY 40: JUST THREE MORE WEEKS!

Approximately six weeks in, the dam’s abdomen is extremely swollen and hard. You will be able to feel the pups moving and rolling around. At this point, the dam may lose her appetite entirely. Breeders should do everything they can to ensure that the dam is comfortable and eating a little at every meal. Try adding a little something extra to the meal, such as yogurt, broth, or a favorite canned food. Also, increase tummy rubs and massages (if she likes them.)

Around this time, the pup’s skin pigments begin to develop, and they continue to grow and grow. One suggestion is to make an appointment with your veterinarian to see how big the pups are at around day 45–47. Your veterinarian will help you to decide if a cesarean section (C-section) is needed.

DAY 47: MORE FOOD!

A pregnant dam may eat up to three to four times what she would normally eat during the last week of pregnancy and during the first few weeks of nursing. Some dams will lose their appetites all together because of the size of the enlarged uterus. Either way, make food available to the dam at all times. If the dam seems to be losing her appetite, try to add tasty items, including broth, cottage cheese, yogurt, cooked (without seasoning) meats, and gravy.

DAY 55: X-RAY DAY!

X-rays are an invaluable resource when whelping a litter, a couple reasons "why" I do radiographs on pregnant dogs.
  • X-rays are generally done after Day 50+ of gestation, otherwise the skeleton hasn't ossified (calcified) enough to count the babies.
  • You can usually count puppies readily on radiographs, again +/- one puppy. (Count skulls, not spines! Most people count BOTH). Even then, someone can be hiding behind another puppy or along mom's spine. This helps me plan for the whelp and know what to expect.
  • The other advantage is that the skulls can be compared in size to the width of the dam's pelvis (not usually an issue with Vizslas).

DAY 60+: IT’S GO TIME!

When it is getting time for the pups to arrive, the dam may spend significantly more time in her den area or nesting site. Bring her plenty of water and food, and make sure that the den or nesting site is clean. Disturb her as little as possible; she needs her rest. You can help the dam by wiping the nipples with a warm wet washcloth and by trimming the hair around the nipples, vulva, and anus to help keep things neat and tidy for when the pups arrive.

When the nipples are gently squeezed, they will produce a milky fluid called colostrum. This is the first milk the puppies get, and it is an important nutrient that helps them grow and fight off pathogens.

Begin monitoring your dog’s temperature. The average temperature of a dog should be approximately 101–102.5. The temperature will drop to 98 degrees approximately 12–24 hours prior to whelping.

The drop in temperature, along with a discharge, indicates puppies are very near to arrival!

Ultrasound results . . . drum roll please . . . 🥁

Harley had her ultrasound at Chino Hills Animal Hospital today. Ultrasound is the best technique to detect the pregnancy from around three plus weeks in, the ultrasound is safe and uses sound waves to create pictures of a bitch’s womb. And, drum roll please . . .

Harley is expecting!

Ultrasounds can't tell exactly how many puppies she is carrying, but Dr. Williams believes between 4-7. It is extremely difficult to count them exactly with this type of scanning imagery.  In other news, Harley was giving a clean bill of health and instruction for feeding and exercise over the next few critical weeks.

Next steps will be an x-ray at Day 55 (just past Thanksgiving Day) and continuing to care for Harley and make her as happy and healthy as possible.

Below is a YouTube video of an ultrasound (not Harley).

No, mom, I wasn’t going to eat it!

Harley found a new friend . . . we hope this is part of her mothering instinct coming through 😂

What is the Sugar & Spice Litter you ask?

Litter themes are the norm when going to such great lengths to plan a litter and the 2018 Jensie x Harley x litter is no different.

The below photo was the inspiration for the Sugar & Spice Litter! Harley's owner took her photo during one of the weekends she was out showing. It summarizes her personality, i.e. Sugar & Spice . . .  a sweetheart with a spunky side!!!

Each pup in the litter will have an AKC Registered name which must include the word "spice" or "sweet" (sugar was too difficult!).

Their "call name" can be anything but it can be cute if they tie back together. For example, Harley's call name came from Harley Davidson motorcycles as her litter was the Easy Riders -- with each puppy being named after vintage motorcycle! Her AKC Registered name is Moonlight's Easy Rider. Make sense?

Here are some examples of AKC names (TBD whether we use Spice or Sweet a/k/a Sugar), but feel free to let me know if you come up with others!

"Spice"

Moonlight Spice it Up
Moonlight Spice of Life
Moonlight Something Spicy
Moonlight Sweet ‘N Spicy
Moonlight Five Spice
Moonlight Spice Islands
Moonlight Sugar and Spice
Moonlight Ginger Spice
Moonlight Spice Berry
Moonlight Spice Cookie

Sugar aka "Sweet"

Moonlight Sweet as Pie
Moonlight Sweet Dreams
Moonlight Short N Sweet
Moonlight Sweet Talker
Moonlight Sweet Life
Moonlight Sweet On You
Moonlight Sweet N Sour
Moonlight Sweet Nothing
Moonlight Sweet Talk
Moonlight Sweet Spot
Moonlight Sweet As Honey
Moonlight Take Your Sweet Time
Moonlight Sweet N Sour
Moonlight Home Sweet Home
Moonlight Sweet Adeline
Moonlight Sweet Sixteen

Planning, progesterone and dog sex (oh my!)

Planning, progesterone and dog sex (oh my!)

Harley is somewhat predictable as far as her heat cycles go -- she came in season on September 14th, which about six months after her last heat. Knowing that her heat cycles are long (21 days) we assumed she may breed later into her cycle . . . (foreshadowing 😉)

When doing any breeding, step #1 is to do progesterone testing. Good breeders do progesterone when organizing each breeding (whether "live cover" or an AI - artificial insemination breeding) as it helps predict the day the puppies will whelp (be born).

What the heck is progesterone testing, you ask?

Basically, progesterone is a hormone produced by the ovaries that rises as the heat cycle progresses. Early in the canine heat cycle the progesterone values will usually read less than 1.0 ng/ml. The first significant, sustained rise in progesterone usually coincides with the "LH Surge". The LH stands for luteinizing hormone and is released by the pituitary gland in the brain. This is important because ovulation occurs about 48 hours after the LH surge. The progesterone value at the time of the LH surge is usually about 2-3 ng/ml. The progesterone will rise to about 5-8 ng/ml at the time of ovulation. Canine eggs are not ready to be fertilized at the time of ovulation and take about 2 days to mature. Once mature, the eggs remain fertile for 2 to 3 days and then begin to deteriorate. Of note: progesterone stays elevated for about 2 months whether the bitch is pregnant or not. We like to know when the "surge" is so that we have an idea of ovulation, when to breed, and to estimate the whelping day.

Harley and owner, Jen made the trek to Dr. Beckie Williams DVM at the Chino Hills Animal Hospital. Dr. Williams is considered the best repro vet in on the West Coast and despite the 1.5 hour drive her expertise is worth it. Harley's first progesterone test was Day 5 (September 19th) and she was only at 1.0.  So we had some time to wait . . . tick tock tick tock.

Day 10 (September 23rd) and Harley was still a 1.0! Three days later and she increased to a 2.0 (Day 14 of her heat cycle). We revisited heat days for her mom, Lyra, who bred on Day 12. But, all breedings are different and we knew we had to "wait for the numbers" so to speak.  She was flagging which is a sign that she is getting ready to be bred.

Woohoo, on September 29th, she was a 6.5! On October 1st Jensie paid a home visit to Harley and we were in luck -- a tie 💘! And, again on October 2nd (16 minute tie) 💘!

More details to follow . . . Harley will have her ultrasound on October 27th (34 days from the first breeding). Fingers and toes are crossed!

"Harley" is from the Easy Riders Litter and represents all I hoped to achieve from the combination of her Sire and Dam (see below for details). Knowing that baby Harley was going to live with her Uncle Leo, from our 2012 Jack x Csilla Litter, made sending her home with the Scott Family even sweeter!

Jen, Leo and Baby Harley

Harley is a gorgeous bitch with a big side gait, lovely front assembly and elegant lines and expressive head -- and she has perfect catlike feet! She dabbled in the show ring sparingly, but life gets in the way, and while she is Show pointed -- her true passion is the field! Owner, Brian was disappointed to lose his favorite pheasant hunting spot but we hope to get Harley back into the field after motherhood.

Harley and her passion - birds! 🐦

Harley herself is the inspiration for the Sugar and Spice litter, as she has her spicy and her sweet side!

Harley comes from a very accomplished litter with two sisters who have been very competitive in the show ring - Champion and Silver Grand Champion, and a brother who is Major Pointed and holds Obedience titles.

Harley's sister "Arielle" GCHS CH Moonlight's Easy to Keep, JH CGC TKN has surpassed our expectations in terms of breed type and temperament. She is a Group Winner, Multiple Group Placer and was the #13 Vizsla in 2017 and is in the Top 25 Vizslas in 2018 (owner/breeder handled) as of September 1.  She was ranked in the Top 10 NOHS in 2017 and 2018.

Her Sire “Baci” (MBISS GCHG CH Jen’s Penny Matra Baci’s Boogie Fever, ROM) is a handsome and moderately sized, yet robust Vizsla who is recognized by his far reaching side gait and clean movement. A true testament to his conformational qualities, Baci was a Top Five Vizsla (All Systems) in 2011. He’s since gone onto earn a prestigious Gold Grand Championship, amassing almost 500 Breed Points. During his show career, he was awarded Multiple Best in Specialty Show Wins (Lone Cypress Specialty in Carmel and Woofstock/Vizsla Club of Northern CA in Vallejo) as well as being a Multiple Sporting Group Winner, and he also won Best of Breed at Eukanuba in 2011, defeating nearly 50 other Vizslas. In July 2015, he returned to Lone Cypress and won Best Veteran in Sweepstakes and went onto win another BISS and Best of Breed at the Supported Entry the following day – not too shabby, Baci!

Bred sparingly, he has consistently produced nice front assemblies/shoulders and offspring with good substance and bone. He has Multiple Champions and Grand Champions to his credit, including Ranked Specials, Group Winners and Multiple Best in Specialty Show Winners.

Personality-wise, Baci has an infectious energy and is a sweetheart around the house. You’d never know he was seven years old — as he still greets visitors with a bouncy and puppy-like enthusiasm.

Her Dam “Lyra” (lie-rah) (GCH CH Moonlight ‘n Tamaron When Stars Align, CGC TKN) keeps me entertained everyday and she is one of the most charismatic and lovable Vizslas I’ve ever met.  She was a very fun girl to show once she matured, and she finished her Championship title in short order with FOUR Majors, including a Specialty Win from the Bred By Class in only a handful of shows. Along the way she was awarded a Grand Sweepstakes Winner, Best of Opposite in Sweepstakes and earned multiple Bred By Exhibitor Group Placements (five in total). As a finished Champion, she went onto complete her Grand Championship title with FIVE Majors in only three weekends.  With minimal bird exposure she picked up a Junior Hunter Pass and I have plans to finish her title after motherhood. She easily completed her Canine Good Citizen award — but I think given her drive, energy level and working ability, she will be my first Agility dog and I can’t wait to see what kind of fun we’ll have together.

* Finished his Championship in four weekends – Owner Handled *

* Winners Dog/Best of Winners 4 Point Major – Bonanza Kennel Club *

* Winners Dog 5 Point Major – SCVC Supported Entry/Lake Mathews *

“Jensie” was named after a famous German cyclist – it’s best to ask his owners David and Ilene for all the details!  Jenise made his way from Zenith Vizslas in Texas to California based on the needs of his owners to find a Vizsla with a fabulous temperament, and he has not disappointed. He is a very sweet boy.

He finished his Championship in a handful of weekends — owner handled — earning two big Majors (5 Points at a Supported Entry) and before the age of two. He has a beautiful shoulder and front assembly and a big floating side gait. Jensie’s head is masculine with a broad skull and nice expression.  He will be shown sparingly as a Special as we are so excited to get him on birds!

Jensie’s pedigree reflects holds a proven strength in conformation and versatility:

His Sire “Beckett” (CH HRQ Ask the Expert, JH) finished his AKC Championship in a handful of shows from the Bred By Exhibitor Class, earning a 5 Point Major at his show debut (6 mos. old) and 4 Point Major in his second ring appearance (the same month). He later won Best Puppy in Sweepstakes at the 2012 VCSC Specialty in Pasadena. Bred sparingly, he has been a very nice producer with a Best in Specialty (BISS) Winner, multiple Champions — nine (9) and counting, several Grand Champions and Hunt and Obedience titled get.

Beckett’s Dam “Q” (BISS GCH CH Tivoliz Now Pay Attention, CD RN MH AX AXJ VC TDI ROM) can do anything she sets her mind to! She is a Best in Specialty Show Winner, Group Winner, Multiple Group Placer, Multiple Award of Merit recipient, and most recently won Best Veteran in Sweepstakes and Select Bitch at the prestigious 2013 Vizsla Club of Northern CA Specialty. Not just a “pretty face”, she also loves her birds and earned her Master Hunt Title and the Hunters Gun Dog trophy; in April 2013 (at age 7) she won the Amateur Gun Dog stake with 26 dogs (a 5 Point Major). She is also titled in Rally, Obedience, Agility and Therapy. No wonder her nickname is “alphabet soup!”

His Dam “Echo” (GCH Zenith’s Back Atcha) has a pedigree full of Hall of Fame dogs including; CH Lyons Skipjack of Harann ROM HOF “Skipper”, BIS CH Penlee’s Cutter UD ROM HOF “Cutter”, BIS CH Harann’s Tulipann ROM HOF “Tuli”, and CH Firebrand’s Constant Comment ROM HOF “CC”, as well as the oldest lived Vizsla (20+ years old) CH Dirigo Gambler’s Marker ROM HOF “Marker”.

Echo’s Sire “Schuyler” (NBISS CH Zenith’s Red Sky At Morning, UDX OA NAJ ROM) won Best of Breed at the 1993 Vizsla Club of America National Specialty (Ohio) under judge Mr. Roger Hartinger.
